Down on the farm….

The Boathouse Head Chef, Simon Rogers, likes to use fresh, local and seasonal produce whenever he can here in the kitchens and we often get lovely fresh fruit and vegetables from The Tacons at Grange Farm in Rollesby less than 2 miles away from us here in Ormesby. They will be participating in Open Farm Sunday 2014 on 8th June and are welcoming visitors to see what happens down on Grange Farm.

The Tacon family have been farming here for 3 generations and now grow 20 acres of asparagus all picked and bundled by hand as well as a PYO soft fruit enterprise too. From 2.30 pm you can drop in and enjoy a farm walk and find out more about growing asparagus, potatoes, strawberries and more and of course buy some of their fabulous goodies from the Farm Shop.

Sounds like a lovely trip out! And don’t forget to drop in on us for a drink with wonderful waterside views and maybe a bite to eat.

Wild about wildlife

Here at The Boathouse we’re situated right next to Ormesby Broad so we’re surrounded by some wonderful wildlife which maybe we can sometimes take for granted when it is right on our doorstep. We’d like to share with you some of the best things to look out for if you’re coming to visit us.

Ormesby Broad is part of the Trinity Broads which is nationally recognised as a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and you may be lucky enough to spot some of the wonderful array of wildlife that is a part of the Broads – Britain’s Magical Waterland – some of which is unique.

If you’re visiting The Boathouse through May and June you may be lucky enough to spot an adult Swallowtail butterfly, found only in the Norfolk Broads and a sight to behold. You’ll often see dragonflies buzzing over the water and do watch for the rare Norfolk Hawker.

Bird species abound in the Trinity Broads system and in the summer do look out for Warblers, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Marsh Harriers, Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps and, of course, the iconic Kingfisher often just a flash of electric blue as it dives for fish. On the water you may spot Mute Swans, Moorhens, Coots and Great Crested Grebes. You may well hear but only rarely see the famous Bittern whose “boom” rings out across the Broad.

Otters are now frequently seen in the Broads, though unless you grab the camera quickly there will be only a trail of bubbles on the surface! Some of our other larger visits include the Chinese Water Deer and Muntjac.

We’re now open for business!

It’s official ….. we’re open!

At last, we had our official opening for The Boathouse Ormesby Broad on Monday 28th April so it’s all go here! We’ve had our fair share of workmen (and ladies too!) over the past few months with builders, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers and more. We’ve made gallons of tea and quite frankly the portaloos have now seen better days to be honest. But now our sparkling new venue is almost complete and we’re really excited as we put the finishing touches in place ready for Monday’s formal opening. We really look forward to welcoming you to The Boathouse very soon – whether you’re interested in booking a wedding or function, accommodation or simply want to try out our fabulous new gastropub. We’re building our gallery of images on our new website to give you a flavour of what we’re all about but here’s a sneak peak….

We’re up and running with our Blog – hoorah!

Welcome to our Blog!

We’re very excited to have started our very own Blog for The Boathouse Ormesby Broad. The Oxford Dictionary definition of a blog is “a personal website or web page on which an individual records opinions, links to other sites, etc. on a regular basis”. So here goes … we like to think of this page as a chance to give you a little peek into our world – warts and all! We want to share with you the whole range of emotions we will no doubt go through as the business gets up and running. We’ll tell you those funny little stories, news about what’s happening here in our corner of the world and maybe even throw in the odd joke or even grumble for good measure – we all need to let off steam sometimes don’t we? Mostly, we just want you to enjoy our musings and of course we hope you’ll come and visit us too.e-sized
